Putting politics aside, lets focus on a man and his journey for a moment.
I never expected there would be a day when Barack Obama would tell a motivational story with inspirational soundbites which would touch me so much and really relate to me on a personal level.
However that day came recently when Brandom Stanton of HONY (Humans Of New York) interviewed him for his Facebook blog with its 12 million plus following.
It was the last part of his response which most connects with me.
He spoke about getting beat when running for congress in 1999 at the age of 40, being away from his family and the pressure it put on Michelle after the time and effort he invested into something that wasn’t working.
‘.. the thing that got me through that moment and any other time that I’ve felt stuck, is to remind myself that its about the work. Because if you’re worrying about yourself – if you’re thinking: ‘Am I succeeding? Am I in the right position? Am I being appreciated?’ – then you’re going to end up feeling frustrated and stuck. But if you can keep it about the work, you’ll always have a path. There’s always something to be done’. – Barack Obama
Make it about the work.
There’s always something to be done.
Wow. When you put that into perspective it can really be a game changer.
How many times have we put of achieving something or starting something because of our thoughts and feelings pre analysing the situation.
I feel as though ‘The work’ can relate to any proceses which needs to happen for you to reach a goal. Maybe you want to get a new job but feel too shy to network. Or you dream of becoming a singer but confine your gift to your bedroom because of a fear of other peoples reactions.
In these examples the work would be forgetting about ‘you’ and going to network or uploading the video of you singing or going out and finding a music partner.
What if this happens? What if that happens, I feel tired, I’m not ready, what will people say.
When you think about yourself before the work all of these excuses and feelings stand in the way of great possiblities.
I know for a fact if I never over thought what people would think and the lack of views videos would receive at the start I would have started my main Youtube Channel (InnateUK) a long time ago.
When I think about the size of my dreams for that channel, the start of the media empire I always dreamt of having, it seems rather immaterial to think of my insecurities as a reason not to have already started the long building process.
Keeping it about the work could also help to shrink big scary goals into smaller more digestible bit size chunks. There will always be a next task to do. Something to keep you busy enough progressing so you have less time to let your thoughts over whelm you.
What is that thing you haven’t done due to overthinking about yourself, if you are the right person for the job, if you are doing well.
On a personal level I kind of made a start on this, this week when I posted a video of a song I wrote on my Facebook page. Which I will write about in a separate post.
If you are like me you have daydreams of future documentaries where you are telling your success story. But lets delay the idea of that gratification for a bit.
Lets add the ‘Make it about the work’ ideology to our SeeYouIn5 Artillery
